Travel tips for mobile phone usage

Recently the Star reported on some mobile users being slammed with hefty bills for surfing the Internet on their handphone while overseas. Be wise because data charges can go up to thousands of ringgits if phone usage are not monitored.

Here are some tips given by the experts on how to save on your data :

  • Before traveling, check out data roaming plans provided by your telco.
  • When traveling, turn off cellular data and data roaming (if you have not signed up for a plan).
  • Alternatively, use local prepaid SIM cards.
  • Use Wi-Fi whenever possible.
  • Don't leave applications running in the background.
  • For e-mails, adjust settings to fetch data once every 30 minutes, instead of every 5 minutes.
